SEO Strategy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The SEO results during the Covid-19 breakout will be hit hard, unless your business is serving basic ammenities. This is actually a great time to go back and look at your website and follow these steps;

Step #1 - Run an SEO Audit

An SEO Audit marks any errors, duplicates, wrong tags, missing HTTP headers, broken links and page errors such as the 404 Page cannot be displayed error or 501 Server Errors. There several tools that you can use, some are free, others are paid, but offer trial versions. Here is our recommended list;

Step #2 - Run an SEO Audit

Proper keyword research takes up a lot of time. You will need at least 1,000 different keywords, split them into 3 levels of search intent and find out how your competitors rank for those specific keywords. You can start the research by using either the Google Ads Keyword planner or SEO tools like MOZ SEO or Ahrefs. Another way that many blogs mention is by completing search queries on Google, but realisticly, it takes a lot of time that can be used optimizing other areas on the website. Once the keywords are gathered, search how your competitors rank for them and how you can create a more detailed and well researched page or post for that keyword. Don’t forget to submit your url on Google Search Console so that your page starts being crawled immediately.

Step #3 - Link Building

Building links takes time and possibly money. You can always write a very detailed piece of content and ask websites to se links to your content. However, keep in mind that most websites are made so that they can generate money. Therefore only a very small percentage of sites will accept linking to your content for free. Therefore, look for well ranked sites that have a high Domain Rating and purchase articles that link to your content. Use tools like Ahrefs or SEM Rush to track the Domain rating and Authority of a website. Be mindful of low ranked websites who link to your content. If you have a lot of spammy links, Google will mark your content as low quality and reduce your website authority. Use the Disavow tool to disaccociate the links from low ranked sites.

Step #4 - Add JSON Structured Schema

Structured Schema is used to give added information to Google about your brand, your site, any events that are happening, etc. Google will use the information to display specific cards for mobile or information cards
on the right site of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). These cards will help outrank competitors and push their listings down, allowing you to dominate the SERP. The JSON code should go in the ‘Head’ section of your website, between the <script> tags. Google just launched the latest Covid-19 Schema, more on this on a future post.

Step #5 - Improve the Site Structure

Many WordPress Builders create a vast amount of CSS files or create different versions of images you upload to satisfy all the options of dimensions it offers. Several different plugins also create different CSS files or duplicate documents. While the ‘slowdown’ during the COVID-19 Virus you can use the time to better understand the site structure and organize it. You can can delete any uneccesary image or, if you have knowledge of code. Create a CSS file and join all the CSS in that file. In the code of the plugins, specify the path to the CSS. In that way, the files will be reduced, reducing the size of the site and the number of files that need to be loaded when fetching the website.
